Multi show

-----One more deal from 22nd European Youth Championship.

Vul: All

Qx--------------------♠xx
QJ6-----W----E----AT7654
AQx------------------JT9x
AJT96---------------K

Which contract is best when you just take a look at both hands?

Obviously 4.

Lets see what happened in real.

At our table East opened 2*(multi) , I bid 2♠ and left 4...

My hand:

AKxxxx
Kx
-
xxxxx

While I was thinking what to bid over 4 a miracle happened and RHO passed to 4. When I asked LHO my screen mate what 4is the answer was told with anger that was transfer to 4. 4 was down 4.

N-----E-----S----W
------2*---2♠----4
All pass

Lets look at the bidding in the closed room.

N-----E-----S----W
------2*---2♠----3
All pass

Nothing changes much, except 1 level lower. 3 down 2 and 5 imps for us.
All tables played this hand either 4 or 4♠ except for 2 teams.
So, I advise you to revise these kind of sequences if you play multi convention.

Save the Queen

---Another deal from 22nd European Youth Championship which needs a bit care not much.

Me holding:

♠Q4
KJT93
Kx
AQxx

My partner opened 1, I bid 2 and he 2nt meaning 15+ balanced. I thought that slam is cold and bid 5nt to choose a slam and last bid was 6 from my p.

N-----E-----S----W
1♠-----p----2----p
2nt----p----5nt---p
6-----All pass

After 9 of both hands:

AKT98------♠Q7
A87---------KJT96
Axx---------Kx
xx-----------AQxx

At first sight it seems that contract is safe when Q of trump is found. I played J of and let North win with Q and after he returned I have realized that I was asked 2 big questions which are ; is J of ♠ is falling? or finesse works? Because if I get 5 spades I have 5+4+2+1 12 tricks however if I get 4 tricks from spades I have 12 tricks with finesse.

I would have come up with solution if I had thought in a proper way that is clear that if I loose finesse to LHO I can still try finesse if ♠ is not good. When I lost J of to RHO and forced for a finesse I got it with ace and cashed ♠ honours which was 4-1 ♠ break for a down 1. And in the closed room it was played 4 making 6.

Not even get close

-----I was in Romania for 22nd European Youth Championship at 8-18 July as a member of Turkish U-26 team. This was my first national team experience and it is a great pleasure that is hard to explain in words.
What should have been written after a unsuccessful championship. You can either write lots of things or there is nothing to talk. Our situation is absolutely the former one.

Really don't know where to start but there is one board has prior to the others .
This board was played in vugraph against Israel which was our 13. Match.

You are holding:

AOJx
J
xxx
KQ984

Both non vul your left opened 4and pas pas, your turn.

You don't face with these sequences and I don't want to just pass and let the board go. First I thought about dbl. However, it is most probable that my p will bid 4 and if I bid 4♠ I was not sure if I show too much values or not. Also I thought to bid 4♠ and then made my last decision as 5. RHO has more to bid and dbled 5 and all pass.

N-----E----S----W
4----p----p----5
p------p----dbl---All pass

Lead Ace of and dummy is:

AQJx---------Kxx
J----------------K9874
xxx------------x
KQ984-------A752

After playing Ace of , defence continued with a low ♠ . Now I took it with J of ♠ and ruffed small dropping Q from RHO. Then, I played followed low by RHO and played 9 and LHO discarding a . Now all hands are clear. (LHO has 2 spades because he played small ♠ mentioning even number of cards according to their signalling.)

♠xx
xxxx
AKJxxxx
-

----All I will do is to play to get 5 clubs from hand 3 from dummy and 3 spades with 11 tricks. However, I ruffed another with Ace, cashed spades and finally giving 1 more trump with -1. In the closed it was played 5 taking 10 tricks undoubled.

If I could think a bit properly I would have find out solution but couldn't manage it. If there wont be dbl to 5 it is hard to play for 4-0 break but which can be played against bad distribution of again mentioning LHO has unbalanced hand showing 7-8 cards . So, if I had played as I told, this hand would be one of my bests.

-----To those who are not satisfied (like me) with the bidding. Better offer is to dbl 4and after partners 4 bid 4♠ shows these kind of hands; with and ♠, more than one suited strong ♠ hand.

Everything but Heart

-----Another deal from Turkish Winter Teams Championship 2009, 1/16 knock-out matches between Izmir BB (champion) and Eksi team.

You hold this hand at west and bidding goes :

♠AKxx
xx
A
AKQJxx

W------N-------E------S----------Vul:N-S
---------3------p------p-----------Dealer: North
dbl------p------4♠-----p
?

-----Now what to bid.You have only problem with ops suit and 5♠ would be asking for .
After partner bids 6 meaning Ace, you bid 7♠ without hesitating. If partner has void , he should have bid 7♠ to 5♠.

W------N-------E------S----------Vul:N-S
---------3------p------p-----------Dealer: North
dbl------p------4♠-----p
5-------p------6-----p
7♠-----All Pass

----Both hands:

♠AKxx--------------♠Qxxxxx
xx------------------A
A--------------------Jxxx
AKQJxx----------xx

-----This grand-slam was bid at both tables with exactly the same bidding.

In Safe Hands

-----Izmir Buyuksehir Belediye team including Turkish legend bridge players Nafiz Zorlu and Salvador Assael, be the champion of Turkish Winter Teams Championship 2009.

-----Here one of the hands from 1/32 knock-out matches between Kolankaya team including Turkish star players Suleyman Kolata and Ismail Kandemir and team Eksi including Dogan Uzum.

You hold this hand sitting south, bidding goes on and time to lead.

♠KT87x
QJ
KQx
Kxx

W------N-------E------S----------Vul: All
----------p-------p-----1♠----------Dealer: North
-p-------p------1nt-----p
3nt----All Pass

-----
Automatically you may think leading long suit. However, you know your partner has 1-2 pts and hard to establish such a suit. If you lead K of it may result in losing a trick as . What about ?. West didn't start with a take-out dbl which means he has no as east didn't interest in so partner has long and it is safe with no fear of losing a trick.
-----Lets see ops hands:

♠AJ9x------ ♠Qxx
Kxx------- Axx
AT7x------- 92
Jx---------- Axxxx

-----At the original deal after K of lead contract is still in danger and down 1 but if east has J of this lead would be fatal. After ♠ lead as it is in many tables declerar easily make 10 tricks however, lead beat contract -3. In the closed room contract with 1♠ -2 and this hand result in -14 imps for Izmir BB team.
